Are you still looking for a nice eatery to try this holy week without feeling guilty? Check-out the now-classic Luz Kinilaw in Davao City.
This famous no-fuss restaurant has become a permanent fixture that local habitues of almost 40 long years ago would be surprised to know that it has continued serving good food at its old location. Ironically, non-residents of the place haven’t forgotten to revisit their gastronomic past whenever they’re in town to the amazement of the locals.
Luz Kinilaw maybe an “ihaw-ihaw” restaurant but it is famous for its magical “kinilaw” (cubed sashimi with seasoning). Kinilaw is an appetizer made of pinkish, fresh tuna cubes seasoned with salt and vinegar and relished with thinly sliced radish, ginger and onions. And for the brave ones, they can add a dash of native hot chili for a fiery kick.
Come to think of it, the servings are a feast! It has some drawbacks though, that is, if you are trying to keep your girth around your tummy, this may not be the right place for you. This is because you cannot help eating your heart out and ending with a bursting stomach.
Your best shot is their delicious grilled seafood: squid, tuna muscles, tuna tail, bihod (eggs of a female fish) and “bagaybay” (fish gonads). Certainly, this is a sure formula for a filling and healthy meal.
Tuna “kusog” or fish muscles is one dish that should fix your memory once you have tasted it. It isn’t usually available in many restaurants and its chewy squid-like texture brings a certain familiarity that makes it worth the try.
In contrast is their grilled squid, which has just the right tenderness, flavor and zest. Ditto their grilled tuna, which makes for a complete Luz Kinilaw experience. Strangely enough, the food connoisseurs behind this all-successful resto have perfected the art of grilling tuna owing perhaps to their insistence on placing the best interests of their clientele first before all else. But of course, its existence over a long period of time continually drawing new and old foodies alike is eloquent proof that a trip to Davao City wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Luz Kinilaw.
LUZ KINILAW is still located along Quezon Boulevard, Davao City. You may reach them at contact numbers +6382-2264612, +6382-2218377. Disclosure: Nothing to disclose, we paid for our meals.
